Limpopo-born South African musician Makhadzi has recounted the humble origins of her musical career when she used to sell her CDs at various taxi ranks and train stations around Tembisa.

This comes after Makhadzi raised the country’s flag high when she bagged an international award at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2022.

Makhadzi won the Favourite African Star after seeing off stiff competition. She was nominated for the award alongside Focalistic, Major League DJs, Nigerian superstar singer Tems and South African celebrity coach Pitso Mosimane, who coaches Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

Reflecting on her latest win and the road that she has travelled in her music career since her humble beginnings when she sold CDs, Makhadzi wrote

One minute you see me dancing and sweating… selling my cd at train stations, taxi ranks or infrot of shops in different corners of Tembisa and around Limpopo…the next iam here as African star.

Thank you very much to everyone who voted for me… we won the Favorite African Star😭😭😭. Thank you very much for accepting me for who i am. I love you.

Makhadzi won her first international award in November last year. She took home the Artist of the Year award at the All Africa Music Awards (Afrima) when she was nominated alongside continental heavyweights Davido, Wizkid, Black Diamond and Focalisitic.

Seems like the sky is the limit for the Matarokisi hitmaker, and a Grammy Award may be next on the horizon.
